Camp Blodgett

Camp Blodgett

Beautiful Camp Blodgett, situated on the shores of Lake Michigan, offered many inner city children their first glimpse of an “ocean like” experience.  Even though the Lake was only a 30 minute drive from their neighborhoods, most of these children had never seen the “big lake” because they had no means of travel.

Thus it was a tragic moment when the leadership of Camp Blodgett was forced to accept an offer to sell its land on the shores of Lake Michigan to the County Department of Parks and Recreation to fund the needed upgrades to camp facilities across the street.  However, a few determined Board members asked for and received permission to carry out a feasibility study to evaluate a community campaign to raise the necessary funds for camp renovation.

MAI performed the study and found that most respondents were “shocked” by the thought of losing this precious asset – one that allowed Camp Blodgett to offer a unique experience to inner city youth.  Thus MAI recommended that leadership not go through with the land sale and instead mount a community campaign to fund the camp upgrades.

MAI had the opportunity to direct the ensuing campaign.  The successful campaign not only raised more than the offered price for the shoreline property, but it allowed the Camp to build a new Lodge on a dune near the shore that added several new dimensions to the Camp’s operation.  Not only did this new Lodge offer many more program opportunities, but it also became a significant revenue generating facility by becoming a very desired location for weddings and retreats. The decision not to sell the land proved to be a “real winner”!
