The Les Cheneaux Community Library, located in Cedarville, Michigan was little more than a glorified broom closet measuring 650 square feet. In 2001, the Cedarville community received a significant challenge gift from an anonymous donor. The donor offered $1 million in endowment funds to operate a library if the community could raise $1 million to construct a new library for the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Meeting this challenge was a formidable goal; especially since the community had no history of significant capital fundraising.
Partnering with a group of committed community leaders, Monaghan Associates led a $1 million fundraising effort that resulted in the construction of one of the most unique libraries in the state of Michigan. The library, constructed as a log cabin and situated on the shore of Lake Huron (within site of the Mackinaw Bridge), has become a valuable community resource for both year round residents and summer vacationers. Following the Monaghan campaign process, a small community of only 276 residents (138 households) succeeded in achieving an ambitious and worthwhile goal.
