Monaghan Associates, Inc. provides capacity building services to non-profit organizations with the tools to become proficient in fund development, public relations, marketing and communications to enable them to achieve their important missions.

Strategic Planning

Strategic Planning forms the basis for development planning. Before an organization mounts an organized development effort it is necessary for the organization to assess its future needs.

Board Development

A critical factor in the success of a non-profit organization is the Board’s understanding of their role in fund development. With the full involvement and commitment of the Board, a non-profit organization can meet its goals and objectives and appropriately serve its constituencies. This service is typically a 1-2 month program. Services provided may include:

  • Identify and recruit Board members
  • Evaluate past fundraising activities and the Board’s role in those activities
  • Evaluate Board giving policies
  • Facilitate development planning
  • Evaluate the organization’s potential for success

Resource Development Assessment

Planning for a new or increased development effort is a step too often overlooked by non-profit organizations. Monaghan Associates will recommend strategies and resources to enhance the success of the development program. Services provided may include:

  • Determine the individual skill sets necessary to successfully implement the development strategies outlined in the organization’s development or strategic plan.
  • Recommend a position description to encompass the skill sets identified for the fund development position, integrating with activities that may be currently outsourced (grants, newsletter, etc.).
  • Recommend appropriate software/hardware necessary for a fund development effort and how it might be integrated with current programs.
  • Identify budget implications for staffing and operating a fund development program and develop a realistic operating budget to support a fund-raising plan.
  • Suggest subscriptions, membership and professional seminars/conferences/programs that will enhance the ability of the organization to reach its fund development objectives.
  • Determine roles and responsibilities of the staff, Board and volunteers for the implementation of a successful fund development program.

Annual Fund

Monaghan Associates will facilitate the creation of a development plan to ensure the implementation of the organizational strategies for development. This is a comprehensive service provided over 3-6 months. Services provided may include:

  • Formal articulation of the organization’s mission to establish suitable background for the planning effort.
  • Determine development program priorities that are consistent with the current and long-range plans of the organization.
  • Suggest enhancements to current and historical development strategies and fund-raising efforts to provide the base for long term planning.
  • Identify and evaluate all development program constituencies.
  • Review promotional strategies to assure integration of the organization’s public relations and promotional efforts.
  • Establish realistic fund raising objectives and schedules.
  • Develop a realistic operating budget to support a fund raising plan.
  • Determine roles and responsibilities for the implementation of the approved fund-raising schedule.
  • Create a comprehensive development plan to include: goals (both short and long term), a gift pyramid with possible donor prospects, timetable, and volunteer requirements, etc. The appropriateness of all fund-raising strategies will be investigated including major gifts appeal, annual giving, and planned giving.
