David D. Hunting YMCA

MAI has a decade’s long relationship of providing consultative services to a number of YMCAs throughout its service region.  Most notable is its work with its hometown YMCA.  Since the late 1880s, MAI has been able to provide feasibility study and campaign services to many of its branches and to its Camp Manitou-Lin.  Through strong administrative leadership and its continuing successes in campaigning, the YMCA of Grand Rapids has been able to build one of the region’s strongest systems.  For that reason, it was not surprising that leadership would undertake the ambitious task of replacing its downtown branch with a state-of-the-art facility.  Part of bringing the facility to fruition was the blending of private support with bonding to accomplish this significant project.  What resulted was the $30 million David D. Hunting YMCA, one of the largest urban YMCAs in the nation and the first to be LEED certified.  This 159,000 square foot facility not only houses a robust membership but it has become a focal point for community programs and outreach.  Today, it even boasts its very own “farmers market” during the summer months!
